How Fast Should Production Accounting Software Be? Inside GreenSlate's Ongoing Push for Speed

How Fast Should Production Accounting Software Be? 80+ Speed Upgrades Later

GreenSlate treats speed as an ongoing discipline. This is a recent snapshot of the 80+ upgrades delivered across the production accounting and payroll platform, with more already in the pipeline. Purchase order grids load up to 40% faster. Project filters load up to 3x faster. Permission lookups consume more than 90% fewer system resources. Every upgrade is live in every GreenSlate account with no setup required.

Ask a production accountant what they notice at 6 p.m. on a Thursday with payroll due, and it isn't the feature list. It's how quickly the grid appears. How fast the purchase order saves. Whether the dropdown opens the instant they click it.

Here's the full account of what got quicker.

    ⚡ 15+ hours a week

"In production accounting, time is our most valuable resource, and GreenSlate is the only platform that genuinely respects that. The efficiency gains are measurable: the single-interface workflow saves our Payroll Accountants 5–10 hours a week and our AP Accountants 10+ hours a week."
    A.H, Post Accountant

How much faster do purchase orders load in GreenSlate?

The GreenSlate Purchase Orders grid loads nearly 40% faster, median load time dropped from 5.63 seconds to 3.53 seconds.

The Purchase Order form also opens faster. It loads its dropdown menus (vendor, account, currency) in the background while you work, so the form accepts input immediately rather than waiting for every list to arrive first.

Purchase orders submit and update reliably at any line-item count. Bulk PDF downloads complete faster while using fewer system resources, so pulling a stack of POs for a producer keeps the platform quick for everyone else on the show.

How much faster is timecard approval?

Timecard load and approval times improved across the board following a dedicated optimization program. Approvers can process multiple timecards in a single action, with clear confirmation of what was approved. While you review a timecard, the next one in the queue loads in the background, so the batch keeps pace with you.

The Timecards grid was streamlined for quicker loading. The Timecard Approval Flow was enhanced with an upgraded rendering approach that loads faster for accountants. Batch timecard creation is dramatically quicker now that Start Form earnings apply automatically. Payroll history and earnings lookups return results faster. Permission checks inside the timecard system respond faster. Bulk edits to large post-payroll batches complete faster.

     ⚡Whole batches, from a phone

"GreenSlate is hands down the easiest app in the market to use. It gives me hours of my day back and had my boss wondering why I was able to leave at 5pm every day — I told him I had already approved every start and time card on my phone."
    B.C., Production Accountant

What did GreenSlate speed up in accounts payable?

Bill cloning, bill form loading, and Bill Autofill attachment handling are all faster. The Bills form loads transaction data in the background so the form is usable right away. Bill Autofill processes multiple attachments through the automated document uploader faster and with a smaller memory footprint, keeping large batch uploads quick. Background bill-verification checks complete more consistently.

A rebuilt Bills grid, engineered for a faster and smoother experience, is in the release pipeline.

What did GreenSlate speed up in onboarding and start forms?

Start Forms load faster and use less memory, including an upgrade that keeps browser performance steady across long sessions. Long lists of account codes load smoothly at any length. Warning messages appear faster. Submitting and approving responds faster.

Custom forms in the Start Work wizard load faster, including for W2 and loan-out employees. Loan-out corporation lookups, employee file attachments, and identity and status checks all resolve faster. The project dropdown for copying a Digital Start Work form loads faster. The Digital Start Work packet holds steady while other crew records are submitted. The Start Form approval grid loads faster and handles large volumes reliably.

How much faster are approvals and permission lookups?

Permission lookups consume more than 90% fewer system resources, which speeds up load times on every screen that checks a user's access, which is nearly all of them.

Approving vendors, purchase orders, accounting transactions, and timecards is faster now that save and approve run as separate actions. Filtering users on approval-workflow setup screens is significantly faster. Role lookups are faster. Copying an approval flow completes reliably at any size. Assigning or removing role permissions registers instantly.

Memory handling for user security profiles was upgraded for greater stability, and the Users grid loads and renders faster. A multi-level cache for roles and permissions is in the release pipeline.

    ⚡ Half the time
"I spend half the time working on a show with GreenSlate than I do with the competitors. Because of this feature, I can charge less for shows using GreenSlate. After all, time is money, and GreenSlate saves me time."
    H.R., Post Accountant

    Left-hand navigation

    Loads up to 93% faster (median 9.9s → 0.66s)

    Top navigation / Create menu

    Loads up to 92% faster (median 8.7s → 0.69s)

Entering codes directly into grid cells is now faster than opening a separate dialog. On the reporting side, Bank Reconciliations were streamlined, ACA tax-filing generation was optimized, and the backend that produces Accounting Report PDFs was rebuilt for speed. Transaction grids retrieve created-by, updated-by, and posted-by details more efficiently.

Left-hand navigation and the Create menu saw the largest gains. Median load time dropped from 9.9 seconds to 0.66 seconds for the left nav, and from 8.7 seconds to 0.69 seconds for the Create menu, reductions of roughly 93% and 92%.

How GreenSlate's architecture keeps evolving to stay fast

A platform-wide refactor of how the application communicates with the server delivered speed increases across all of GreenSlate. Project Settings moved to a multi-level cache, eliminating repeated database round-trips. The production caching cluster was consolidated with the cluster serving GreenSlate's backend microservices. Large front-end components were modernized. A core front-end library was upgraded for better performance and compatibility. Text content was moved out of the index file so the application opens faster. Logging safeguards keep system logging lightweight. An internal project-access API was optimized for consistent response times, and NetSuite transaction syncing now runs uninterrupted.

We also subtracted. Legacy payroll report, ACH, and check-printing settings were retired, and the whole platform got faster for it. A recipient-count display on system emails was removed after it was identified as a platform-wide drag. A Start Date column came off the Employee Positions grid to speed up the grid. Roughly one in five items on this list was a removal rather than an addition.

Why does software speed matter in production accounting?

Production accounting runs on hard deadlines, so platform speed converts directly into finished work. Payroll closes on a fixed day. Cost reports are due before the production meeting. Purchase orders gate purchases that gate the shoot day. Every second spent waiting on a screen is a second not spent on the judgment work that actually requires an accountant.

Most payroll and accounting platforms serving this industry were architected decades ago, and that architecture shows up in the place that matters least during a demo and most during a workday. A modern architecture is what makes 80+ upgrades achievable at this pace, and it's the same reason Bill Autofill and Timecard Intelligence can be layered onto a platform that keeps getting faster rather than heavier. Fast platforms are inexpensive to improve. Slow ones are not.

    ⚡ Twenty-six years of comparison

"I'm particularly impressed by the real-time data updates. I watched start paperwork go from 'pending' to 'complete' as I worked. I started with Cast & Crew's PSL twenty-six years ago and have used every iteration since. I have also used all of EP's programs from Vista to the 'Smart' suite. I can say thus far GreenSlate and its team are head and shoulders above either one."
