Black History Month: Celebrating Black Storytellers

In 1976, President Gerald Ford first officially decreed Black History Month a national observance, saying “we can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

From the fictional account of a night shared with Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown in Regina King's directing debut One Night in Miami, a 2021 Gotham and Spirit Award winner and Golden Globe nominee, to the story of an immigrant’s journey in Ekwa Msangi’s 2021 Spirit Award nominated Farewell Amor, these are our picks that celebrate the accomplishments of Black storytellers, both in front of and behind the camera. These films tell important stories of adversity that we must continue to learn from and recognize.
