Don’t Miss Buzzed-About Awards Contender ‘First Cow’
In November, the Independent Filmmaker Project kicked off awards season with the nominees for the 30th annual IFP Gotham Awards. “First Cow” led the field with four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay. Since then, the film has continued to gain recognition from The Hollywood Reporter, Time, The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times, and others, including landing the #1 spot on IndieWire’s ‘Best Movies of 2020’ list.
IndieWire’s Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn said this about the film: “Reichardt’s movies work wonders out of ineffable desire, fixating with profound curiosity on ostracized loners on the margins of society eager to settle in. “First Cow” consolidates that skill into her most satisfying movie to date, a minimalist period drama about companionship, the birth of the American dream, and yes, the titular bovine. The joke of “First Cow” is that, well, who wants to watch a movie called “First Cow”? And the irony is that everyone should.”
From A24: “A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow.”
Production: An A24 release of a filmscience production. Producers: Anish Savjani, Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino.
Crew: Director: Kelly Reichardt. Screenplay: Jon Raymond, Kelly Reichardt, based on the book “The Half-Life” by Jon Raymond.
With: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Alia Shawkat
First Cow is now available to rent or buy on Amazon, iTunes, and other platforms.

“If you're not using GreenSlate for processing production payroll, then you're not thinking clearly. We run about 10–12 productions a year and have used several of their competitors. I've put off sharing this as I've truly felt they've been a competitive advantage.”
