After the Wedding, a gender-reversed remake of the Oscar-nominated 2006 Danish film by the same name, chronicles a complicated philanthropic exchange, where a philanthropist who has dedicated her life to a financially struggling orphanage in India must travel to New York City to meet the benefactor of a generous, but mysterious, grant for the orphanage. Once she arrives, things get complicated.
IndieWire’s Eric Kohn says “After the Wedding amounts to easy viewing, strung together with a smooth visual style and the script’s workmanlike pace.”
Variety’s Peter Debruge calls the film a “sensitive remake of Susanne Bier's overcooked Danish Oscar nominee… flipped from a male-driven meller to an emotional showcase for Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore” and that “All involved have endeavored to maintain, if not strengthen, a grown-up scenario that respects the audience’s intelligence, even as it rather shamelessly hikes the emotional stakes with nearly every scene once the momentum gets going. After a point, the twists come so steadily that I actually found myself holding my breath for long stretches — despite the fact that I know the original well — eager to see how key revelations would play out within this new dynamic.”
The film is directed by Bart Freundlich and produced by Harry Finkel and Joel B. Michaels, a co-production between Riverstone Pictures and Ingenious Media. Nik Bower and Deepak Nayar are executive producers for Riverstone and Peter Touche and Andrea Scarso for Ingenious.
After the Wedding premieres in theaters on August 9th.
